First, check out google external adword keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) . Search for the keyword that is related to your blog. Pick a few keywords each time you write a post in your blog. And concentrate these keywords whenever you are doing your link building too. Always don't pick higher competitive keywords for beginning. You might give up doing SEO by doing that.

I just want to add a point with article submission just go on to for top and high ranking article directory and submit to only 30 or 40 article directory as it will help you a lot in long run
Create interesting articles that are worth linking to, do social networking and visit high-trafficked blogs and sites and place your comment there (don't forget to add your link). Avoid buying links from blog farms. I've tried it once to one of my sites. They won't bring you any traffic at all. Sometimes even links as most of these sites are banned by Google.
