Advice about Running My Own Affiliate Program

I am totally new to affiliate programs and how they work and how best to get people to sign up to them, so i was wondering if someone could give me some advice.

I have recently bought some software and i have set it up on my site (site in signature), and what i am looking to do is give my affiliates 40% every time they sell a copy of my software. I've set the software up and i am really happy with it, i'm using affplanet.com.

What i want to know is, are their sites out there where you submit your affiliate programs for people to see, or do i just have to wait for people to visit my homepage and see the link for something like 'Affiliates Click Here'

Should i promote my affiliate program just like i promote my website and products?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Phil

I would contact sites that are either promoting similar offers or sites that you think would be able to refer lots of sales and invite them to join.

    Hi Phil,

There are indeed directories you can submit to, but it can be difficult to recruit affiliates to a private program.

This is why many merchants & advertisers go down the route of using an affiliate network who have the affiliate base ready to promot the offer in question.

    Good luck with your campaign.

http://www.affiliatefirst.com/ has a submission service where they will submit your affiliate program to the top 50 affiliate directories for $59. I have not used it, but I have heard some good feedback about their service.

I understand what Dave is saying about private programs, but there are those of us who prefer to deal with independent affiliate programs as opposed to dealing with networks...so I really wouldn't worry too much about that aspect. There can also be a BIG downside to going with a network. Your affiliate program can get lost amongst the 1000's they may have.
