Advertising on Streets using stickers, illegal?

I have always wondered whether it is illegal to stick advertisements around the streets. I think it is, since it is vandalism just like grafitti but maybe there are places where you can legally stick advertisements.

Forexample the "Escort Ads" (or so called 'tart cards') you see in phone booths (in London) were only made illegal on September 2001 which might mean that other forms of advertisements may be legal.

You also see alot of posters randomly stuck around the streets near election time. Are these legal ways of advertising?

It will be very odd if it is legal since anyone could just get 1000s of lables of my website domain and hire someone to stick it around the streets and surely that will ruin the look of a town if every website owner starts doing it. Are the laws for this kind of advertising the same in the UK and US?

    Thanks

I'm not sure if its illegal or not but I had some sticky note pads printed up with my domain name and a special offer.

The pads are 4x3 and the "stickum" is not permanent so it never leaves any glue behind but is strong enough to adhere to almost any surface.

It seems to work OK and the only problems I've had is when a friend or associate sees one and gives me a hard time :)

You will need to check with your local authority. In many authorities you will get an automatic fine (They obviously track you down from the contact details) and in most cases it is a fine per piece.

In almost every authority, there are different rules which govern political signage so don't assume that you can advertise your site just because you already see a lot of political posters.

yes i would say it is illegal, since if your sticking them up you could well damage propety (well not so much damage but leave behind unwanted messes)

What if say I print 1000 printed cards of my domain, pay someone to stick it around streets. Would the authority contact my host, get my contact details and fine me? I could just pretend it was not me who has stuck the cards around the street but it was a competitor who is trying to get me into trouble.

I would check with your local authority, but I doubt the police would really track you down for doing this. But hey you never know.

I belive that the owners of the land were those posters are stuck are paid.
