Advertising for relatively small sites.

    Hi,

I recently (February) started up a website - http://wwwallyearfootball.com where the target audience is fantasy football fans. I am using adsense for my main income source, however, I am guessing that once football season is almost over, there will not be many advertising clicks. Given that, I am looking into alternate advertising sources. Currently I am signed up for adengage and adbrite, however, I am guessing that my volume of traffic (around 10K pageviews/month) is not enough to really get people excited about spending money on my site.

The site is growing pretty well - alexa shows the 3 month average ranking at 6.1 million, but the 1 week average has been running from 1.1 million to 780,000.

So, I have a few questions:

    1) Do any of you know of a non PPC or affiliate site where a site with only 10K pageviews/month stands a change of getting some revenue?

    2) For advertising services like adbrite/adengage, what is the main factor that advertisers use to determine where to advertise? Is it traffic, visitors/month, subject, etc?

    Thanks in advance,

You need much more traffic - advertisers won't take you seriously until you hit the top 100k in Alexa (unless your specific niche is identical to theirs).

For a site like yours I would probably start advertising on those college entertainment sites - the traffic is generally pretty good and should get a few signups and heaps more traffic.

    Hi Allyear,

I don`t know if you would be willing to put up a sportsbook banner. Your site does not have to be gambling related , but with a little banner on a good spot before the football season starts could be a good move. The program in my signature is the one I am familiar with. They have one of the best conversion rate in the industry and pay you life time commission on the people you refer.
And also there is a $ 100 extra on your first check from them.

But to be honest I have never had a chance to experience how a fantasy football audience would convert but I don`t thing it would be that bad.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have recently added a sports gambling site link to my site - we will see how it does.

The replies do bring up a few more questions, if you dont mind:

    1) How big a difference is it from an alexa rating of 500,000 to 100,000? as I said, I have improved from 6 million to 580,000, but I guess I dont know if I will reach above 100,000 at my current rate of growth.

    2) What do people think of using things like trafficswarm, etc? Is this generally considered black hat?

    Thanks again!

You can also get a lot of CPA programs for your website. And since your site is about American football you should be able to find some nice programs even football related (or sports related). The sportsbook ideea seems good (let us know how it worked) - you can also try with magazines and DVDs (I just looked and there are a few nice sports related programs at Clickbooth - see my sig - so other networks might have similar CPA offers available)

trafficswarm and other Traffice Generation system generally don't do much to help, if at all. most people just surf in order to earn credits. and with respect to adsense, google discourages traffic credit systems like that.
