Advertising an affiliate site on TV commercials?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by tarponkeith, Sep 3, 2007.

The other day I saw a commercial for a Nebraska tourism site on TV (here in FL)... The domain was something horrible, like nebraska22.com or something (it had 2 digits at the end)... When I went there, it seemed to be just affiliate links for other tourism companies...

Has anyone tried this? Is TV getting so cheap to advertise on that lower quality websites can afford it?

Anyways, just wanted to know if anyone's tried this, and if it worked...

    Thanks :)

I wonder how they could afford to advertise on TV. They must be owned by some corporation or something.

SpotRunner has some pretty cheap advertising, who knows. It could have been just some joe shmoe throwing money things he think will work?

I have been seeing alot of commercials lately with no other purpose than to direct you to a website domain name.

Such as local classified ad websites, local video sites, TV network sites, Gamers Sites, GoDaddy commercials, and just alot of other various commercials that promote websites.

And if the commercial isn't for a website it almost always has a URL show up somewhere.

    Some examples are Ubid.com
I saw a commercial for Ubid.com saying "come now and bid".. .......

But the URL advertised was 91Ubid.com

I checked and it looks like they own 10-100 ubid.com and probably more.

    Also,
I saw a commercial for 151CrazyFox.com. Well don't ya know it takes you to CrazyFox.com. Looking more closely I can see that they own a hundred or more of these types of DNs.

I wonder if owning all of these DNs is worth the reg fees? Isn't there any other way to keep stats on your commericals and the traffic they produce?

I also see the various travel commercials, but I agree that many of these numbered sites are for tracking the ROI of different markets, different commercials, different time slots, different TV shows, etc.

    Yes.

You could run an ad in a decent size city for $75.

Wow, I didn't know it was that inexpensive.

I'm sure that must be the price of a slot on some off-beat channel at 4:15 am... LOL But I'm sure it generates some traffic.

I see alot of these types of commercials on channels like the CW, TNN and USA I think? Late at night or early morning 2am-5am.

I bet it won't be long until google adds tv ads to its list of services.

The greater the audience the more you pay for a 30 second TV spot.
that is why the late night, unpopular Tv network is dirt cheap.

the reason companies put things like nebraska22.com and nebraska21.com is to track the success of the ad campaign.

    Also tarponkeith,
Could it be you mistyped the domain name and ended up at a site full of links?

Perhaps someone else saw teh site and though "great time to hack for profit"

TV is becoming less popular as more and more people spend more time on the internet. There is still a place for 30 second commercials, but online, If you're interested check out my signature for how to get your own Tv commercial for the net to drive quality website traffic for free.

Test the success by giving ad in your local cable before moving toward TV ads.
