What are peoples opinions on "advertise here" adverts? I think they're a complete waste of time and space. Take, for example, an arcade game website - of which there are millions - surely you're going to get people wanting to play the games rather than advertise on your website visiting. This then makes an "advertise here" advert pointless. I don't understand why people don't put affiliate adverts in such spaces when they have no private advertisements to display. For example, an amazon or gamestop advert for the latest video games will surely earn you more than an advert that is very unlikely to lead to any money. I just wondered what peoples experiences of "advertise here" are. I would have thought the optimum thing to do would be to display an actual advert (such as an affiliate advert or so) or perhaps even some internal adverts advertising things such as a forum you may have with a "want to advertise here?" text link underneath it rather than taking up the whole space. And, even more ideally would be no "advertise here" text link as its likely subject to the same criticism that people aren't going to click it as they don't wish to advertise and instead have a clear 'advertise' link in the header, navigation or footer - as someone who wants to advertise will know to look in these places! Just wondered on peoples thoughts!
I agree with you. I think they are somewhat unprofessional. You don't ever see them on large business websites. Generally, I view them as a sign of desperation. I would much rather see people advertise affiliate stuff even if it's not making them any money. The advertisers don't know that and will probably be more inclined to be your first true advertiser.
Yes, but there are also some who are advertisers. I don't play the games, but I am an advertiser. If I see such a spot open, I'm going to send him an e-mail. Many advertisers, who know what they are doing, will. Advertising a spot for advertising is very common, and a smart thing to do. More experienced webmasters who have large traffic would rather sell most if not all of their available space to advertisers at, say, for example, $500 for a month, or $750 per 1,000,000 impressions. They will not get that with affiliate ads. If they do have that rare spot open, they will put in an good-paying Adsense of affiliate ad, just to fill that space. The reason you rarely see them on the more larger sites, like, say, bullz-eye.com, is because they do not have to.
I'm aware bigger sites dont need to but I think smaller sites may get more money if they at least advertise in the adspace (either affiliate or adsense) while also advertising (perhaps underneath) that it is free? or, at least on rotation so 'advertise here' only shows 1 in whatever displays! they could also then advertise on here and other such forums where potential advertisers will be looking!
I think they look awlful, istead of having 'advertise here' add a banner from a affiliate network then underneath add 'advertise here' it looks so much better
I differe here, because "advertise here" clearly shows that space can be bought for money. If you have affiliate banners then it is not clear whether that space is available or not. People usually link the advertise here to buysellads.com page, that is very clear and nothing confusing or objectionable
