What is the advantage of using a subdomain rather than create another page or directory? In my case, I have a website that offers art contests and opportunities for artists and photographers. Is it more effective to have: art-contests.asingularcreation.com asingularcreation.com/art-contests.htm Why? Does one return better search results than the other? Thanks very much for taking the time to help, Joe
That one of the key differences is in how search engines see the url the subdomain is seen as a different branch of the domain(think higher level) while the directory is seen as being a sub part of the main domain(think lower level). Remember also that the subdomain is a part of the domain as opposed to the directory only being a directory. The subdomain should get higher priority I believe. I'm sure there are more important differences. Personally, I used subdomains for the simple fact that I liked the way the url worked then.
The only reason that I really use them is because my hosting company has a nice interface for adding redirected subdomains, do I convert all of my affiliate links to subdomains to make them shorter and look nicer. Jen
Sub-Domains can be listed on Search Engine Pages, where as if they were folders google will only show 1 page, and the sub-page. If you have 100 sub-domains, in theory google could show all sub-domains on that page
