Unfortunately, this is what happens when an open-source product is sold to a commercial company. The original product becomes a 'community edition' and the focus turns to the development of a commercial product.

MySQL is a good database but will need some serious development effort to catch-up the commercial competition (Oracle, DB2, SQL/Server) and that can't be achieved by relying on volunteer contributions by the open source community.
