I have an issue with geotargeting for a client. We have implemented a www.example.com/ie subfolder for the Irish version of their site. In google webmaster Central we have set example.com/ie to be targeted to Ireland. This has been in place for a couple of weeks. The new subfolder has been indexed and has a PageRank value of 3 yet, if I do a site command restricted to pages from Ireland, the site does not show. Google clearly is still not associating any of the site with Ireland. It does not rank anything like as highly as I would expect it to. Has anyone got any ideas/experience of implementing geotargeting in this manner? Why hasn't it worked! Thanks!
Simply throwing up Irish pages and telling Google that it's an Irish website is not enough to get rankings in Ireland. You need to get plenty of links from websites that are associated with Ireland... -.ie extension websites -websites hosted in Ireland -websites that discuss Ireland -websites that rank well in google.ie -websites that list an Ireland street address
