I noticed a strange referral in one of my logs and visited the URL. It turned out that it was an adult site in the co-op network. The url is www free-toplist .biz

I think its a hosting site with lot of other stuff. Also the adult thing you saw is probably google ads. ( I saw an ad saying "Adult Webmaster forum" )

I think you misunderstood the google ads as website.

I saw that too; but checked some of my text files and the name isn't there. Most likely it's referrer spam.

Pull up the site and then click on Top 100. The list is all adult sites. Now look at the bottom of the page - you will see the co-op ads.

BTW, here is the exact URL, with co-op ads, that linked to one of our sites:

    www (dot) free-toplist (dot) biz/listen/416/index.php

Good job golf guy. I stand corrected. I'm sure Shawn will take care of it. Nicely hidden links too. They are also on the yourcan net as well.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if I had to wait 2-4 weeks for one of my sites to be added to the Co-Op if it meant that all sites went through a manual check for content.

Yes, it would be a lot of work. But I would bet that a bunch of trusted volunteers would sign up to verify sites (kind of like ODP editors, but hopefully without a 2 year wait :) ).

I agree that is a pretty disgusting site. However remember that even if your link does appear on that site, or their link on yours, it is only for a single refresh.

Does anybody really think that anybody clicks through on these links? These links are all for Google's benefit. They come and go like thieves in the night. And I'm still of the opinion that a link is a link is a link. So I don't quite understand the extent of the concern and outrage.

That's how I found the site initially: in my logs, someone had clicked thru. I get quite a bit of clickthrus from the ad network; believe it or not. Just as people click the links on my site and go to others.

Considering that I state on one site that it's family friendly; no adult sites yada yada, yes it concerns me. Considering the ads run on a scout site - family friendly - yes; it concerns me. Luckily; any parent likely to visit the scout site is a tad computer challenged anyhow and they would miss it. Am I outraged? No. I would however hate to see a good thing get ruined.

well I've got the links on a forum used for youth wrestlers and their parents, so if by chance one of them did show up- it can hurt your business badly. One person saying, "Site A has a porn link" can affect dozens and dozens of potential buyers.

I think we should be clear in this discussion with separating sites that serve ads and sites that are targets of ads. It sounds like this site and a few others are serving ads (if they were found in referrer links). As much as we don't want that, it's going to be tough to manually filter all pages that serve ads. Also, does it really bother you that an adult site links to you? Are prospective customers googling link:yoursite.com' and sifting through the results to make sure no adult sites link to you? Even Google admits that you have no control over who links to you.

Now, if we start talking about adult sites being targets of ads, that's a completely different story and I agree that needs to be stopped immediately.

Is it possible that someone hacks the text file because it's chmod to 777 ?

I run a few real estate sites where people looking for their future homes where they can grow their kids, friendly communities and schools info.. porn links can hurt our business badly. I do like co-op network a lot even though I'm less than a week in.. wouldn't it be great to group all the links into categories and show only related ones for each site? Then I beleve click throughs would make much more sense. Also, I do have a hand full of referrals for the past few days from the network.

How can you be sure of this? There is nothing that identifies a referring site as a coop ad network site.

It's not all that hard to click refresh and see a whole bunch of links that you KNOW are involved in the network.
