Adsense's TOS is unfair on proxy owners.

I for one know that proxy sites provide a service that many people use frequently, and the toll on servers and bandwidth is considerable.

Why then, does google ban the practise of placing ads on "proxified" pages because they are not your content?

Basically, my argument goes like this:

The proxy owner pays their host for a hosting account at an inflated price (in order to run the proxy, and to allow the website owner to run the proxy in accordance with the host's TOS). This will cost them a lot.

Why then, does google prohibit honest revenue from ads on proxified pages? If someone visits myspace with my proxy, they'll see ads for myspace. I don't think it's unfair on myspace, since I'm paying for the bandwidth too, and in all likeliness myspace wouldn't get that traffic if my proxy wasn't there (as they're most likely getting around a web censor).

Correction - you can place ads on the first page of a proxy, but not on any proxified pages. Since those are where the bulk of proxy traffic are, I'd like to know why it is illegal.

Well, I kind of agree with Google in this case.

A proxy is .. a proxy, that means users access various sites using your server.
You can not really control what people are accessing therefore you could show Google ads on porn pages.

Also, Google wants to have their ads tuned to the page.
As all your proxy pages are actually a single page - index.php and some parameters - Google would have to scan that index.php page all the time and find relevant words. Even for Google, that is not possible - and I'm sure you wouldn't want to double your bandwith.
Google caches your index.php page, finds words inside it, shows ads.. For about a week or so, no matter what site is accessed through your proxy, ads for those words would be shown.

As long as the pages are statis, they don't change to often, for example the main page of your proxy site, you can place Adsense on them. Oh, and as long as the content of that page is adequate and according to the TOS

Does a proxy front page equate to decent revenue? I have three adsense blocks on the front page. I don't see any point in spending so much bandwidth if I can't place ads on the proxied pages.

proxified pages are just the pages shown to you by the proxy. Sometimes they will have a small form at the top of the page with a logo for the proxy.

I recently ran a proxy site (sold it now) and I do see why your angry that you can't maximize your revenue by placing AdSense ads on the proxified pages.

But to be honest, I do see where Google are coming from. Think about it from their point of view:

    1. By placing your ads on the proxified pages you're trying to earn from other webmasters content.
    2. You have absolutely no control over what sites the visitors view using your service. When I ran the proxy site I noticed that a large proportion of my visitors were going to adult pages.

So my suggestion would be to find a CPM ad that you can place on there. CPC doesn't work too well on proxified pages anyway.

Although I was agree at google when they disabled ads on my proxy site, I see their reasoning.
Users can go to gambling, adult, warez etc. pages through the proxy. Thus the google ads will appear on those pages and google doesn't allow that.

You can use alternatives such as adbrite for the proxified pages and keep google in the front page.... which does BTW bring a decent amount of income.
