I recently read a post about doing well with Adsense in French. What languages do you find that do well besides English?

Well I have Adsence on some Portuguese sites and can say that revenue is not that great. It is the 7th most widely spoken language in the world and still no joy….

The problem is that many people prefer to have their ads in English. I have sites in Portuguese that hardly get any relevant ads but my English sites about Portugal are filled with ads from Portuguese publishers.

    Emperor,
I guess that your website(s) are in tourism industry (and your signature also points to it). So the advertisers you are speaking about are targetting English-speaking visitors.

    Good point coredump.

If I counted well on the list you mentioned above, Dutch is number 40 with (only) 22 million speakers. But it is not just the number of speakers that is relevant. The Netherlands is an affluent country and they are in the Top 3 of countries who use Internet the most in Europe. So there is a fairly big market and a lot of money is spent on Internet advertising.

Do have access to amount spent on advertising by language or rankings beyond English and Dutch?

I have always noticed some smaller countries do well on my English based sites, two that stand out are Australia and the Netherlands. I don't think being English only is a hinderance to many Dutch users. Part of the reason I asked my original question was that I knew that the number of speakers of a language was not the key but rather it should be the number of internet users doing business in a certain language.

I have traveled to over 25 countries and only in France and Japan was communicating English a problem. So French and Japanese are both candidates for language specific sites. I also consider Spanish and German but I would think both might visit sites in English and I am not sure how much business is transacted on Spanish sites. Chinese is also intriguing.

I think it depends on the number of people using the internet. If in Portuguese speaking countries only 10% of the population use the internet regularly I would guess that advertising would be rather limited. In Portugal there is a good amount of advertising on the internet but I think many advertisers still prefer to invest in local media “portals, sites, search engines, messengers” than use google for their campaigns.

First, I must say your English is excellent (almost too American as you use the term soccer instead of football :) ).

I guess I am realy looking for languages that business is conducted in. I am thinking besides English, it may be Japanese, some form of Chinese, French and Spanish. Portuguese is fairly wide spread from Brazil, to Macau, and through Africa but I expect some of those places wouldn't have much advertising and many probably do business easily in English. I am starting testing in French and German with Japanese coming soon.

    Thanks.
