Adsense vs. Selling Ad Space

I have only been blogging for one month, this has been a huuuuuuge learning experience. I started off with Adsense image ads on the left of the site, I have since done a total rebuild of the blogs to better fit the ads and noticed the difference immediatly.

ANY CRITIQUES ARE APPRECIATED!! I have examples of before and after the redisign below.

My question is, however, why not just sell ads space on a monthly basis once my traffic grows stronger?? I have a somewhat local audience, being in Boston and NYC, and young visitors. What would be the reason to stay with Google? Is ad space difficult to sell?

Check out my sites and let me know what you think, they may be AFW (awkward for work) haha. ok, NSFW

    bostonunknown.com (completed, 500impressions/day, 50 cents)
bostonunknown.com/sports (somewhat ready to go live)
nycunknown.com (waiting on content before going live)
bosotnunknown.com/snatch (waiting on my writer, this still has my OLD design)

Thanks for the help! (and advice)

Personally I would tell you , why don't you use both of the ways !

Don't you have space on your site ? Is it too heavy to handle both of them ?

Simply make 2-3 different spots for each of them and you are done :)

    Site looks good.

One advantage to using adsense is you can set it and forget it.

If you sell adspace you will have to find the clients, convince them that advertising on your site is good investment, invoice them, and then follow up when they do not pay.

How were you planning on selling the adspace? Do you have a company in mind that was going to find you ad clients?

I am interested in hearing more about the improved results that you found with setting your blog up this way. Which ad units give you the best result?

I have just set up my first double right column site:
    Headphone Reviews

I have ads in some of the same places as you. Let me know if you see any changes you would make.

Also expand more about how you were planning to sell ads locally and I will share my thoughts.

    Great site!

    Thanks!

I am expanding quickly with bar reviews, and hopefully on the forum. The audience is typically from Boston and the NYC site is getting hits on its own somehow. I am getting most hits from the top right skyscraper and the large banner under the menu, as expected. I made sure that the ads all stay text, no images, in order to blend in. I only had a hit every other day with the other set up, this one I had 2 clicks within the first half hour I set it up like this. I think with people having to roll over the ads to get to the right hand menu makes them read them more often.

I used to be in sales, so I was going to call large bars and clubs within Boston and NYC to see if they would be interested in advertising. I have not honestly put too much thought into it yet, realistically the site has only been "live" since Oct. 25th. I like the layout of yours as well, if you find anything that works better let me know.

AdBrite! You can use that company to sell your ads space, but don't know is it compatible with Adsense TOS.
