To celebrate my 200th post, i thought post somethine useful.... Most people place lots of ads at the top of the page because thats where the traditional 'hotspots' are, but what happens when the user actually bothers to read through the 'content' on your page. Looking at the tracking stats one of my sites i noticed that a lot of users were clicking on the a link in my copyright notice right at the bottom of the page... Apparently some users (particularly msn traffic) are so lazy that they click any old link just to get away from the site. So i deleted the link in my copyright notice and placed a single adsense ad beneath the copyright notice. The number of clicks has gone up by around 30-40% and the revenue is up by a similar percentage. Just thought i'd share
Most often people skim through a page and then go back up to click on an ad, if they think it is worthwhile.
this seems to be a good idea, which also reminds me that the overlay function in Google Analytics might help in identifying which links are being clicked on a page and then you can place your ads accordingly on a web page.
good tip, I might try a link unit across the very bottom, although if there is nothing at all to click down there (my usual setup) visitors have to go back to the top, where the higher paying ads are. Were people really clicking on 'Copyright'? I don't think anyone ever does that on my sites.
Google Analytics shows a bar under the link on the overlay. The more blue on the bar the bigger the share of clicks through to the destination page. The problem with this is that if you have 2 links to one page (an in context link with the content and a menu link for example) the both show the same percentage click thrus. It measures the page you go to rather than the actual link you clicked to get there.
