adsense not good for high traffic sites? better to use ads that pay per impression?

hi, a site like craigslist would benefit more from a ad that pays per ad impression right? if so, what is a typical payout per impression, 3 cents or so?

Less than that - typical ads from a CPM ad company like Valueclick ranges from 10c CPM to $4.50 CPM. That's *cost per thousand impressions*. That means you get 10c to $4.50 for every thousand impressions.

Most CPM ad companies frown on forum-like sites though because of the high churn in page views. And I think Craigslist would be considered forum-like.

Craiglist would make more per click or with affiliate links than per impression. I agree most per impression pay very little and most would not pay for forum advertising.

I think that CPM ads such as valueclick, tribalfusion and fastclick should be used as supplementary income. Put adsense on your page, and optimize your page for adsense then put in a CPM banner somewhere that doesn't take away from your adsense. This way you gain your normal adsense, plus a few extra (or extra hundred) from your CPM ads.

It's just a bit harder to get into CPM ad programs.

You're right in that CPM ads should be complimentary to PPC ads, because everyone on these forums know: not every one clicks. :)

As for hard to get in, ValueClick lets you in as long as you have at least 5000 page views per month and I think that's easily achievable for anyone serious about their online income.

But it's geotargetting. If your visitors from USA, it's a big advantage.

    wow, they really do?
would they accept a site like mine, or only blogs? i'm doing 30k pageviews a day so that would earn me some more than i do now with clicksor(2 bucks a day with popunders)

That is totally dependent on the site in question. Some sites do not do well with adsense, not matter what you do to them, yet they may tend to draw in the good paying CPM ads.

I'm thinking of getting rid of my Adsense banners - they are pulling in either NOTHING at all, or 1-2 cents for CPM. Nobody ever clicks them either (mostly because they suck and have nothing to do with my site). Should I use feedburner? I get about 2,300 impressions per day.

Even with the minimum 5000 pageviews per month requirment they don't let in just any site. I might actually look into it :)

do you already have feedburner feed on your site? if not then get one and get substantial feed subscribers and then they will invite you to FAN. I am currently only running ads in feeds but will soon test it out on site once more impressions are generated.

to get into FAN, you atleast need about 300 odd subscribers. I enrolled when i was close to 1000 now i have almost 2000 subscribers.

about impressions i get roughly 100K impressions per month..
