I just signed up for Adsense and I'm ready to start. Ok so I don't have an account yet, it's being reviewed, however I'm excited. Any good tips? Or things I shouldn't do? I'm new to adsense so I'm sure i'll screw something up. :D

Most important thing is DO NOT CLICK YOUR OWN ADS. Sorry for shouting, but it is that important. And don't let your brother or sister or wife or child click them for you. Don't encourage your visitors to click them. Basically, read the TOS and FAQ on adsense site thoroughly, and then implement, test, play with colors and placement, and enjoy.

Yes, you can do any site you want (as long as it's within the guidelines) after you are approved.

Now that I'm in.... do people prefer one ad style to another? I like the ones that show the most ads but they take up to much room. I'd love a long skinny one that showed 5 ads but that doesn't seem to be an option.

You say not to click your own ads, but what if you actually are curious about an ad, and you are willing to become a customer for the advertiser. Does that still break the rules?

I think you are going to get credit. My guess is that google makes statistical analysis for the IPs. If a certain IP region clicks too much, Google starts to suspect something is wrong...
But, this is just a guess..

anyway, the URL is always shown below the ad. Copy and paste it to the URL toolbar, and have a look! :)

Don't click your own ads, don't encourage your visitors to click them, and don't "trade" clicks with other publishers, and you should do just fine.

Personally I prefer white leaderboard with no borders on a site with white background, haven't done enough tetsting to say for sure other formats wouldn't give better results though.

ok.... I'm not trying to scam the system so please don't think of it that way... but .... how does it know if i click on my own links. Is it just the IP i signed up at? So if my friends IP and my home IP are different, I could click once or twice at my friends house? I'm just so scared to click on any of my links but I really wanna click on one for some reason. :D You know to test it out.

It would be the same as you clicking ads on your own site.

    Twister,
It is against the rules to click your own ads, whether in the forum or on your site, whether you do it from home or another computer.

I have no idea how Google determines if you click your own ads, and the chance getting caught if doing it once or twice is probably very slim. However, even one click on your own ads would be breaking the rules, so I would suggest playing it safe and resist the urge to click :)
