Adsense Myths

There are a lot of myths about Adsense floating around. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure myself on some of them, and I don't think anyone but Adsense can be sure. But some myths are just way, way off.

What Adsense myths do you hear a lot? Which ones are making you scratch your head and wonder if it's really true?

Here are a couple myths to get started with, and my feelings about each of them:

1- The more ads per page, the better. This is almost always wrong. Usually, the best performing pages (highest eCPM) have 2 ad units, a link unit, and maybe a custom search button (awesome if you have a large network of related sites).

2- It's not ok to have warez on a page with Adsense, but it's ok to link to warez pages. This is not true at all. A lot of folks think they can link to warez pages from their site and have no problems with it, but that is actually conspiracy and you could actually be criminally charged for it, not to mention that Adsense doesn't allow it.

3- Filtering advertisers leads to higher paying clicks. I'm not sure about this one. According to Adsense, this is completely false. My personal beliefs are that it's probably true, but I'm really not 100% on it.

4- Adsense will only ban you if you break the TOS. I have never been banned by Adsense, but I know for a fact that this is false. If you just read the TOS, they don't need ANY reason to ban you.

5- You will be banned if your ctr is too high. This is so wrong. It amazes me how many people believe this. The truth is that if you are not violating the TOS, a high ctr (10%, 20%, or even higher) is not a problem at all. It usually means that you have a low number of impressions, or that your pages just suck and are making the searcher want to go to any other page for what they are looking for, other than yours.

Are there any other commonly held beliefs that just bug you?

    :)

Diversifying is soooooooo smart. Placing all your eggs in one basket, when Google is about as reliable as my broken down truck, is just dumb. A very intelligent person would not be earning more than 10% of his income from any 1 site. Nice 1!!!

These are very good points. I loved the one about CTR especially. No matter what I do, I cannot get the CTR above 2%....
