Adsense moral dilemma

i have offered to build a site for a friend/local businessmen
and i asked him if it was OK to put a tower of ads on the side of each page :D of course he said "no problem"
Shall i do it? I am also concerned that because he has NO IDEA what they are, he will be clicking them all the time. He lives quite close to me, so not only will i probably get a lot of clicks from his IP... I guess it is also identifiable to my locality...which sounds even more dodgy

what do you reckon? or shall i just kinda say to him.."btw, don't ckick the ads"

    TIA...

I think it would be the best thing if you say to him "DON'T CLICK THE ADS!!!"

I think you should explain to him what adsense is, and give him the option of signing up for adsense if you're looking to be a nice guy. He IS a friend afterall, right?

Offer him his own channel, and alternate the ads (but off course so his come up less often or are less prominent) then at the end of the year tell him you'll buy him a pint with the proceeds. Oh yes. And don't click 'em ;)

    1) Tell him not to click on the ads, of course. :)

    2) Sign him up through an (your) AdSense referal link so that when his revenue hits $100 or (local equivlant) you get the same amount in your tea cup from Google.

Come on folks - don't refer for a quick $100 - think of the long term gains - image his site is such a hit he misses out on that much per day, even sharing it with his friend. :D

sounds like a better plan than $100, if i want that i could just charge him $100 for making the site.

I would definitely go the route of giving him a percentage of the earnings from the site. Now since you are going to be maintaining the site you should naturally get a larger percentage. <gets calculator out> I would say 60/40 would be fair.

I guess it depends how much of a friend he is and whether or not you'll mind losing the friendship when he finds out you've been raking in the bucks off his site without his knowledge. (All it takes is someone to ask him what kind of money he's making from his ads to get the ball rolling....)

I missed the fact you'd be maintaining the site. I think open and honest is fair.

Explain what's what, tell him as you're doing the work and you think a xx/xx split is in order.

Watch out, karma gets you everytime.

Just don't put the ads on his site!

If you earn much you can lose a freind and if you earn nothing it doesn't worth it ;)

Don't be a shoemoney! Do what is right, tell him about adsense and let him decide. In the end, it will pay off for you. Forget about the money. The fact that you ask says you are a good guy, so do the right thing!

You didn't missed it, he never said he was maintaining it, just that he's building the site for the guy.

    @original poster,

In which case, not telling your buddy about the Adsense, while you secretly pocket the money, is not how a friend treats each other. The fact that you keep trying to justify secretly pocketing the money without him knowing it means you already know it's wrong.

Plus, if karma works the way it does, he'll probably end up clicking on your ads and getting you banned. :)

I had this same dilemma once.
In the end, I decided not to put my ads on my clients website.

I thought about asking him if he would like to create an Adsense account and I would manage it for him (and take some of the profit).
Thats probably the best way to go about it.

No man, try to talk him into selling methosllmaila (or whatever the heck that high-priced keyword) legal information and don't tell him what adsense is :) Now you could be making some bucks! Just like it says in those Adsense ebooks!
