Adsense may be driving customers away from your website

I have to admit, every site i visit, before you see the content on the website you seek, adsense ads are the first thing you see. I think that they are very distracting and it drives customers away. So many people are adding adsense to their sites for a few pennies a week, why bother.

    Whats your opinion on this.

With an average CTR of 3% on most of my sites, I think it is unlikely that you are right...

If the first thing you see at a site is AdSense and if you have great difficulty finding the content, then you are probably going to move on from that site. You might even click an AdSense ad to escape -- which is what these people hope. The purpose of those sites is not to get repeat visitors but to entice one-timers to click out through ads.

Sites which are content based and which have AdSense are not going to drive people away because they have some ads. Those sites have repeat visitors because they have something people want and they tend to put content ahead of the ads.

You cannot conclude AdSense or advertising in general makes people not visit sites. It is the make-up of the site which makes the difference.

i am glad to see that i am not the only one who thinks this. I feel that if you that if you put adsense in the way of the content, then you are not trying to entertain the visitor but merely fool him or her to click on the adsense ad.

    very annoying

I disagree. As long as there is a lot more content than ads, then I don't find any site that displays adsense ads annoying. Whether in the middle of the content or in the beginning or end. When I click into a site and all I see is adsense, well that is another story. Those types of sites I immediately exit anyway and NOT through the ads!

Also, high content sites offer lots of valuable information on a particular subject and they should be able to display ads in order receive some $ for the time and effort they put into providing this information.

My ctr rate is barely 1% so I really don't think my ads are driving people away from my site. :D

people who don't use adsense don't know what it is...as long as it's not a pop-up they are happy

Ask any of your non-computer savvy friends what adsense is and they won't have a clue

Ads in magazines and newspapers don't turn me off if the editorial is good and what I'm interested in. Ditto with webites.

But, yes, don't put adsense right in my face or I'm off. be subtle and improve your CTR.

The adverts may well take some readers away, but if your content is good, they'll be back

I suppose it may be true, if the majority of your visitors are Internet Savvy webdevelopers. However, the regular joe schmoe probably isn't affected at all by Adsense, it's just another link on a page if used properly.

checkrankings - you might be seeing the Adsense ads first because you are looking for them, even if it is sub-concious. Did you ever notice when you buy a new car you see them everywhere all of a sudden?

Good point! I don't think the average searcher looks for them like those that use adsense tend to. I am always looking at them to check placement, blending, etc. to get ideas.

I think this is exactly it. A majority of people still have no clue what Adsense is. Most still have no clue whats the difference between Organic and Sponsored on a SERP page.

My roommate was a classic example. He searched for Mercedes pics on G and he clicked on the first sponsored result. He's on the computer everyday, goofing around, but still on the computer. He has no clue. That's what the majority of surfers are still doing.

That's true...all my friends are fine with ads on the site except for pop up ads which they hate alot. They always thought pop up ads are virus or people hacking into their system. :)

You had me running off to the website I manage to see if I was guilty.
    stepfamily.asn.au

I actually see adsense as a way to keep the website online, but have noticed that in fact there are some good information available via the ads.

Dont like pop ups, and try not to overdue the adsense ads.

Depends on how you use them.
