AdSense labeling policy loosened

After reading the AdSense Program Policies, I noticed that the old restriction against labeling AdSense ads as anything other than "Sponsored Links" or "Advertisements" has gone by the wayside with the new policies. See my latest blog posting for the official word from on high.

Minor thing, but interesting to note.

Hi Eric, I came across your blog post earlier today. I'm currently using 'Sponsors' but will probably change it to 'Resources' or similar.

While that's interesting I'm sure that it wouldn't allow something like'related sites','top resources'or any other label that could be misleading. Be very careful with this and check with Adsense support on whether your specific label is allowed.

This seems interesting and something to look at. I'll read over the TOS and see if I come to the same conclusion

Oh, Google has definitely confirmed it. But you have to be careful with your text. I'd run it by Google first if it isn't some variation of "Sponsored Links" or "Advertisements" (i.e. something like "Sponsors" or "Advertisers").

As for what use there is in labeling ads... it depends on your layout. Obviously, if you're blending the ads into the content then you won't label those. But many blogs and sites have labels for the different parts of the page. If you have an ad block in such a layout, this gives you more flexibility in labeling the block.

Thanks for this -- these changes usually pass me by until someone points them out...

Do you think 'Selected Links' is OK?

No I wouldn't put 'selected links'. Make it objective.
