AdSense - Does competition matter? Does AdSense pay more when it's used as a backup

I've been using adsense and was wondering if it matter whether i use adsense as the only ad on my site or if i use adsense as the backup to another ad network. It seems like i get better CPMs when i use it as a backup to another ad. I was wondering if adsense thinks that it's competing for ad impressions as is increasing the CPMs when it is used as a backup.

I have noticed that 2 though I can not say it means you will make more with it as backup

I tuned my ads to text ads only...we'll see how it goes.

Hrm, this is interesting, but I doubt it. People would start putting other ad sites in things like invisible frames to trick google into increasing CPM, even though it would technically be the only ad getting the clicks. It could very well just be a coincidence. I'm fairly certain text ads also give you less than banner ads because they are less prominent (however, text ads have the potential to display up to 3+ actual ads, increasing the probability that one of them would be appealing when compared to one non-text banner that people may ignore).
