What do you guys think of the current AdSense competitors? What do you look for when evaluating other ad networks? What would convince you to switch from AdSense to some other ad publishing network?

Just trying to get some feedback for a project I'm working on. Thanks in advance for any helpful input.

Adsense is losing ground in the online advertising arena. Yes. From an advertiser point of view, facebook would be a much better advertising platform. In that case, i hope facebook offers services similar to google adsense. :(

What do you guys think of the current AdSense competitors?
Just off the top of my head:

    • Yahoo Publisher Network.
    • MSN AdCenter
    • Adbrite.
    • Chitika.
    • Azoogle Ads
    • Burst Media
    • Clicksor
    • BidVertiser
    • CPXinteractive
    • Kontera
    • Vibrant Media
    • ValueClick
    • RightMedia

Google AdSense is the best one I've come across though.

What do you look for when evaluating other ad networks?

Look for reviews. See the click through rates and see if people are actually being paid. I also make sure that the company that you are publishing ads for on your website are legitimate and won't screw you over when it comes to pay day.

What would convince you to switch from AdSense to some other ad publishing network?

Higher click through rates. PayPal payment availability. Or some big search engine opening up their ad publishing services world wide. (*Cough* Yahoo Publisher Network) -- MSN, Ask... any of the big search engines really.

echo_unlimited, what factors would entice you to try a new, unknown ad publishing network, if any?

Did you switch back to AdSense because it's the best out there, or just because you had no other choice?

I've tried many different networks. Adsense, Media Shakers, & Adbrite. Now-a-days, experimenting with infolinks and chitika but I personally like adsense till now. Higher payout, payment trust (Google property), easy to use control panel and & ads relevancy.

I'd switch if I got ... well, basically all the stuff I'm writing my own ad network for. Clean, moderated ads that actually match my content, not stupid dieting ads all the time that you cannot stay on top of to block. And the power to block by site not just across your whole account. Also block by keyword, block by category, block by advertiser, etc etc etc.

Also, why do you want high traffic sites to test with? I'm not at testing stage yet and the last thing I want is high traffic sites during testing, its going to cost a fortune in hosting as is for an ad network.

Considering the projcet has the backing of a large hosting network (ever heard of Burst.net? ;)), hosting fees should not be an issue. The model is going to be somewhat different from AdSense, which is why I want to beta test with large publishers.

What I seem to be gathering from this thread is that Google AdSense is the only highly-trusted ad network that remains. It is trusted because payments are reliable and the company can be trusted to ethically perform. Downsides are a lack of PayPal payments, low CPM/CPC, and lack of control over ads. Does this seem to be correct?

    That sounds about right.

But I'm not sure how you are going to compete. You need advertisers which is what Google has, which then allows for relevant ads. Unless of course your service is going to be very specific about particular genres. (Which I've seen some publishing services do) i.e. they'll only pick websites which their advertisers want advertisements on. It makes sense, but then limits your publisher base. Though you can still expand once you those advertisers I guess.

So I'd say relevant ads is another thing which Google AdSense provides and which helps with gaining clicks for publishers.

I guess the fact that Google AdSense are typically Google so in a sense you can trust them to more than the extent of some unknown ad publishing groups.

But hey if DP started to do something similar to AdSense, I'm sure DP would get a lot of sign ups. Just how the implementation works out I guess. But they'd need the big/small advertisers first.

Also for the advertisers side of things, if I for example was an advertiser then I would want to make sure that my clicks weren't fraudulent. Google, Yahoo and all the major ad publishing groups go to a long extent to flush out anyone that will hurt theirs and others business.

google is the first one, but if Facebook starts any kinda same program as google ads, they can be a good competitor for google..

The only way to know for sure is to split test.

They have their own system (Facebook) where you can advertise on their site etc. But I doubt a system where you publish their advertisements would work. They have the user base, but really that only works one way in my opinion with a site like Facebook.

I mean it could work. But not the extent that Google AdSense or even Yahoo Publisher Network has got to. -- I mean just look at where YPN stands right now. A lot consider it a failure.
