    for example lets say I just started a blog on pig fungus and I'm trying to crack the top 3 in the google search rank... how would I know how close I'm getting to the big boys (aka top 3)

    You can type the keyword in google and check by yourself

    type the keyword in google, and for the first 3 results you can check the following:

    -backlinks (check also the anchor)
    -indexed pages in google
    -how much content do they have
    -how old is the domain
    -seo score

    i think this is enough to tell you how powerfull your competitors are
