I think one of the most important is driving quality traffic to your sites, not bot traffic. Some friends of mine got banned because of that.

    Click on Your Own Ads
    Hide Your Ads
    Beg for Clicks
    Alter the Code
Use Robots to Click on Your Site
Tell People How Much You Earn Per Click
Make Pages Specifically to Display Ads

These are the things not to be done or else your adsense will be banned.

Nothing can do- if your destiny is to be banned- you will. can be some rival in the top of your site. My advice to make few accounts.

Which is against Googles TOS and if you have an account that is in good standing and apply for a second one from the same ip then they ban both accounts. If you even logon to more than one account from the same ip then they ban you. They have 100 people in the UK alone working on adsense anti-fraud, whatever you've thought of they've got it covered. If you have an account and have no problems with it then DO NOT apply for another account, or your existing one will get banned. I've had two queries this week alone from people who have done this, one was earning nearly $500 a month and his brother asked him to create him an adsense account, he did so from the same PC, and bang! Banned the next day - He is now SO happy with his brother! And the guys site was 100% compliant, unique content, privacy policy in place etc. But they banned him as even though the account was in his brothers name it looked like two accounts on the same ip.
The best thing to do to not get banned is read the TOS and make sure you always comply with them, Google actually write them to help people out you know. Most bans occur because people fail to read them. Anyone reading this running adsense and not have a privacy policy as an example?

try reading their TOS instead of asking in a webmaster forum...
If you can't read it at least once, you won't last...
    -
Below is the worst advice anyone has ever given in this forum... it will get you banned quick. You don't want to risk anything with Adsense because once your banned that's it. Do things the right way or you won't last.

The most important rule is common sense. I have had my adsense account for years and years without having any trouble. It's not rocket science. Read the Terms of Service and do not do anything you even think would be agaisnt the rules.

Exactly! IDK why some people just have problems following rules and reading TOS. Like you said, it's not rocket science.

It isn't hard to know what will and wont get you banned, even if you don't read the official TOS, as mentioned, it is all common sense.
The main reason that people get banned is because they have no patience and expect to earn thousands of dollars on the same day they first install Adsense, after a few days with no earnings they decide to start clicking their own links, participating in black hat activities or place the ads in misleading positions.

Read the TOS, have some patience and keep building quality content = No ban.

Of course the rules are in the adsense policies, you should read them enough times and understand it that you can know from memory what type of content is ok with adsense or not.
But even by knowing and respecting the rules you can be banned from adsense, I'm the living proof since I started in 2003 and got banned this summer only, so it means I knew the rules well enough about what to do and not do to not be banned, no? Well I now am a banned publisher, but of course for others just reading what I write they will think there's something more to it that I was not aware of or that I'm hiding. I know it's not true because I have no benefit lying to myself and I have documented (on my forum) the process of how I have been banned and the follow ups from the appeal process. And if you can see me at fault, when it's clearly monkeys running adsense policy team, then it's your problem :)
