Hi I'm a new user to these forums and seemed to be the right place to go for my questions. First of all I'm still a little confused on how adsense works. Does it pay by impressions (like if Google sees that impressions give you the most revenue they'll focus more on that)? Or is it solely based on Clicks on the ads on your site? Will they allow you to put google ads on a page that doesn't have a lot of content on it but just gets to the point? Me and a group of friends of mine are making an online mmorpg and wish to place adsense ads on it. The thing is some of the pages are straight to the point and don't give a deep description and aren't what you'd call content-rich. These are pages like the blacksmith page where you buy your weapons (You see a list of weapons and you choose which you want to buy) and the training area (you choose which type of soldier you wish to train/untrain) The homepage should consist of some info on the updates of the game and the logos of the game's races. Basically its something like www.kingsofchaos.com or www.darkthrone.com These types of games bring in lots of traffic which is why I wanted to know if Google will focus on impressions if they see your revenue is mostly coming from views and not from clicks. I know someone who has already been banned from using google adsense and he expalined to me that it was because he didn't have enough content on his pages. I mean who wants to see a bunch of paragraphs on a web/turn based mmorpg? Would probably turn users away w/ all the words. The game hasn't been finished yet but I would like to know all that I can about google adsense before I get myself involved with it and I thought this would be the best place to go to for that. Thank you all in advance for your help.
Read Google's AdSense TOS. Then read these forums. There is a lot of great information already posted.
Hey, I have my own MPOG, and ive had adsense on it for the past 2 years, no problems. Google can still target good ads to your site, so its not like your users will click on lawyer ads when your site is a game, the ads will be game adverts. Good luck with your game, Pete
You know, seriously, you're so right. I mean, for God's sake, Google has its OWN SITE and its OWN PAGE that explains all this. All you have to do is visit it and read their FAQ. And still people are so lazy that they run to forums and post a long list of questions. If you're too lazy to even read their TOS or FAQ, how do you expect to put any effort at all into your sites to make it worthwhile? /Rant off.
I have always wanted to start a thread about what you said, jackburton! Too many noobies come in here expecting quick reliable answers. And they have never read the google tos and faqs! Like we will okay their ads? Like we will okay their sites? Yeah, a thread "Read Google TOS and FAQS before posting your noobie questions"
I don't really mean to be rude, either, but this is such an elementary question especially if you plan to make money off the program. You can basically type "Adsense" into any search engine and the first page would tell you all you needed to know. There are tons of "Adsense FAQ" sites out there. But I have no idea how this fella found a forum, registered, and then posted. It's like he said, "To hell with reading anything else, I'll just ask!" To OP: I don't mean to pick on you, it just seems like you didn't bother to do any work at all before coming here. But to answer your question, Adsense is based on a Pay-Per-Click system. That is, you get paid when someone clicks on the Adsense ads, and Google splits the profits with you. The other way you can get paid is Per Impressions (or CPM), which you can choose to display along with the PPC ads. Once you sign up for Adsense, it gives you the option of selecting both PPC and CPM. In general, most people don't rely on Adsense for CPM, as the real money is in PPC.
as a matter of fact I have read the google TOS I must've skipped the part where they answered my questions and I've also read Joel Comm's book on what w/e never told you about adsense. In terms of "how do you expect to put any effort at all into your sites to make it worthwhile?" Trust me we're putting a lot of effort into the site we're making atm and it isn't appreciated at all for someone to go and say that. The only time I see anything about impressions on the TOS is when they're talking about Cancellation, no guarantee and payment. Tell me if I'm be reading a different TOS from the rest of you... I came to this forum to ask the questions because it seemed like the right place to ask. I'm sorry if I was wrong and this was in fact not the place for me to ask. I didn't know that I couldn't ask for help in posts and that the 1 and only way I could learn from this forum is to search through it. Thanks for all your kind statements dsm thank you for your post and jackburton thanks for your last post before this one.
I don't recall making this choice between PPC & CPM. So I went to my account & I don't see where the options are. Please point me in the right direction. And would it be a good idea to choose both? Would adding in the CPM hurt in any way?
Google talks about cpm for publishers, and how they are best suited say for blogs, but I can find no place where I can add such ads to my site. Tell me now, Jack!!!
My Account --> Ad Type Preference. You can choose to display only text ads, or a combination of text and image ads should image ads become available. Whatever you choose becomes your "default". Or if you want CPM image ads only, you can just choose it in the "Ad Layout Code" section and pick "IMage ads only in this unit".
I thought we were talking about instead of ppc, impressions of the ads. Still don't see the impressions to set up.
Go to: dsense/account-settings If you want to be able to be paid per impression then turn: "Onsite Advertiser Sign-Up" ON if not, turn it OFF. (edit) This doesn't mean that you WILL get paid per impression this means you MAY get paid per impression IF an advertiser signs up for your website. It gives the opportunity to get paid per impression in which you should get paid as much or more as the ads per click.
with apologies to ziyi (jack) i think we can't choose whether to display more of PPC or CPM ads. Google decides that. and if i read correctly, swift wants to know if there's any option that allows you to choose between more CPM versus more PPC, or whehter Google puts more PPC versus CPM ads. i think we won't know. but like activefarming said, the onsite advertiser thing may increase chances of a CPM ad.
All you can do is specify whether you want text and/or image ads (it's selectable per ad unit). Google then selects the type of ad that it thinks will pay most, whether it's PPC or CPM.
Wait until you finish your site then think about the right programme that suits it. I am not sure adsense is the best for your site. As long as the page is not empty and is not made just for adsense then you're not breaking the TOS. However a page with only images of weapons won't get you ads to display.
Oh i see what you mean but its not only images on the page lol. The names of the weapons are actually there its just in list form and you fill in the amount you want to buy. Most likely the CPM based ads will be best for me since the site should generate a couple million impressions a day based on over 100,000 users. Therefore hopefully theres an option that allows me to focus on impression based ads.
I'm just taking a wild stab, but AdSense doesn't sound like the way to go here. Unless you expect your players to have an interest in buying those weapons for themselves? Might be a niche market worth exploring, but I suspect you'd be better off publishing the game, finding sponsors who want to advertise to your players, and going that route.
