I got the code working on my homepage and then tried to validate it. No luck as the rest of my site was in .html and didn't have the ads. Recreated the whole site as .php and added the ads to every page. However, now that it is all done when I try to validate it the system turns up the old .html files and says that the code is not present. Despite the fact that they've been deleted off the server.
