Setup the code like I've done on many sites in the past and it simply only shows "advertising" and "internet advertising" ads.

This is over 3 seperate sites and 3 seperate domains/servers.

Hmmm... I'll check the ad server logs. It will fall back to the default ad if there was some sort of problem rather than spew errors which would be displayed on everyone's site. I just now checked it manually and it seems to be giving non-default ads. But I'll check the logs to see what may have been going on earlier.

Same deal - I was working on the 'my own sites filter' - got it working - I thought
cleared out the .txt file - got a handful of ads - cleared the .txt again - started only getting DP ads.

My first reaction was - I must have broken the code, but the more I dug around the less it made sense. So eventually I just reverted back to the orginal code, and still got the DP ads.

I would say this was about 1hr ago (maybe 2hrs - time flies when you're having fun)

Are you saying you are picking and choosing which Coop Ads you display? Can you explain that a bit further?

(While Shawn is checking things out)

    No.

I'm saying I've done a standard setup and it only displays Shawns ads.

I'm preventing my sites from linking to each other.
Many sites on the same IP

I mentioned before that I read about t2dman doing this - with Shawns help,
so I assumed it was no problem to do this and had been meaning to do this for a while.

It just means that my sites won't links to each other.

However I've just added the links to *another* new site on a completely different server and it's fine.

    [edit]

and the sites that weren't working are now collecting real ads again

Well, it's not going to retroactively go into your cache file and change the ones that are already there.

It was TFMG's post that confused me
I didn't realize he was talking about it showing Shawns ads. I thought he was implying that he uses a code change to get only Advertising related ads to show.

I didn't realize he was saying that he had the same problem as you.

    Cheers

Sorry it's late here and I'm tired :)

I'm certainly not changing any of the code. I'd love to put rel=nofollow on the end and make them open in a new window mind you.... :)

so I'm guessing there was a problem with the DP server
which now means there are lots of extra DP ads in everyones .txt files :p

Lets not even go there (rel=nofollow => ads vs links, traffic vs SERPS etc)

It was the ad server end, although it fixed itself before I did anything. Basically if there is an error, it logs it, but spits out a default ad (better than spitting out the actual error since that would get into people's cache file then).

Long story short it has to do with ad server generating 10GB+ worth of http logs per day. While the logs were being processed (for the stats update for yesterday) the site was temporarily over it's quota, so it couldn't write out a small file it needed to for ad serving.

I've already made some changes so that little file is created as the root user, so it's not subject to the normal disk quota that the server uses.

Yeah, it generates a lot of http logs (and growing of course). So while it was writing out some temporary files when parsing the log for the stats data, that "site" was over it's quota for a little while.

Anyway, as I said, I changed some stuff so the root user is the one generating a little (but very important) file (root isn't subject to quotas).

So, while I'm looking at the code - as far as I can tell, the cache file just keeps on growing. ?

    Which makes me wonder....
If someone leaves the co-op, does this mean their ads will still be shown? be it at a slowly decreasing rate.

    Or am I missing something?
