I tend to agree with you.

Google says "We ask that publishers not line up images and ads in a way that suggests a relationship between the images and the ads."

In that case, it would appear that an ad like this should still comply with Google's policies.....or maybe not....? Certainly, there's no lining up of individual thumbnails with individual ads in the pic below.

On second thoughts, Google's statement... "We ask that publishers not line up images and ads in a way that suggests a relationship between the images and the ads" would still exclude the above image. The height of the image is the same as the height of the adblock and so would probably be interpreted as lining up to suggest a relationship between image and ads.

I'd say just don't do it. It's not worth getting banned over the interpretation of a rule. Google won't give you a chance to argue. Check out my homepage in my profile for a free Adsense site.

Don't forget that you can always email AdSense support and ask them to rule on a proposed ad layout. Just do a sample on a test page and send them the URL, they'll tell you whether or not it's OK.

    Hey,

Just in case some of you don't know, images next to AdSense ads are now against the ToS.

    >>> Read More Here

I just learnt this in another thread titled "Google AdSense Updates" but as it didn't make this point clear in the OP I decided to post one with a better title so people don't miss it. :)

Although I thought this might happen sometime, it still comes as a shock... I just removed all my images next to ads. I hope the decrease in performance isn't too much. :(

Not only image next to adsense ads... the second sample there is about blend the ads...

"Publishers should also be careful to avoid similar implementations that people could find misleading. For instance, if your site contains a directory of Flash games, you should not format the ads to mimic the game descriptions."

    http://adsense.blogspot.com/2006/12/ad-and-image-placement-policy.html

"You can definitely place Google ads on pages containing images -- just make sure that the ads and images are not arranged in a way that could easily mislead or confuse your visitors. For example, if you run a stock photography site with a catalog of thumbnail images, don't line the ads up with the thumbnails in a way that could be misleading. Consider using a full border around your ads or changing your ad colors, for example."

    I feel that is good.

If they tell what is not to do, people will stop doing.

    A good thing from AdSense.

    Thanks

You're probably right, but so many sites have to be converted now.

Hard to say how heavily they'll be enforcing this, but probably not worth the risk.

I have a thin black line separating the
    image from the adsense ads.
Start to feel unsure if this is quite enough

If you read the entire post on the Adsense blog, you'll see that they don't like that anymore. They go as far as suggesting you "unblend" your ads so as to help your visitor avoid any confusion between the images and the ads. So not cool. :(
