I am looking for a graphics package that allow me to do open, and do simple editing to Adobe illustrator AI files as my Illustrator tryout has now expired, and I am saving for the full version!

Does anybody know of a package that will do this? (preferebly with a free trial!)

    Many thanks.

You could try Corel Draw 12.

Ok, now I have an new problem...

I tried to download an alternative package and it changed the files to non-readable (whilst still being called AI files). Nothing will open them. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Inkscape - http://www.inkscape.org is an open-source option. It's not pretty, or very usable, but it just might get the job done.

I just recently started using Xara Xtreme and I like it a lot. I've made some great graphics so far.

I use both and must say that Coreldraw is as good as illustrator.
Go for the software you're most comfortable with.

Btw... its latest version is x3 (v 13).

raja, i feel that after the acquisition of macromedia, adobe wont continue Freehand as they already have a superior product like Illustrator.
