I was recently banned for a week.

The "reason" given was (words to the effect of) "1 week ban" which is not the reason for the ban, but its duration.

I emailed asking why I had been banned. Twice.

I have had no reply, and am none the wiser what I am supposed to have done.

Why could noone contact me to tell me I was doing something wrong, so that I could fix it? Why was it necessary to ban me outright? surely if I did something worthy of that response I would be aware of it?

How am I supposed to avoid this happening again, if I don't know why it happened in the first place?

Your infraction / ban email would show you the post that was the problem. If you stayed on top of the rules (it's your responsibility to read announcements and stickies in areas where you post), you would know that telling people to post in your thread to express interest violates a rule that's been in place for several months - it results in an immediate 7-day ban. So that's the reason. In the future, please brush up on any stickies in areas where you're posting.
