    Hi guys,

I am sure some of you have a directory....I just started one

    http://www.all-blogs.net

    How did you integrate Adsense?

Is it worth it or are you only offering paid links???

How do you make money with your directory???

    Cheers

Correct, I agree. Fill in your directory, get some traffic in, and let them do submissions as well. My 2c.

Why would anyone submit when the link back is required? There are already many good directories that don't require a link back.

    Hi,

no reciprocal link is required to get listed in the directory.

Why do you think it is?

Are you sure you made this site? its not an off-the-shelf directory?

Loose the recip link, loose the ads, get it filled up and people using it first :)

    Hi Critters,

well maybe my English isn't good enough to grasp all the small nuances...

But in my opionion "Please" means that I am asking you to do it not that it is mandatory.

    Or is it so misleading???

Well when my wife says "please can you do the dishes" it means "you WILL do those DAMN dishes or ELSE" :)

Looking again I see it is not a required field, you are right. But please include is just polite but for me still sounds a little mandatory.

Maybe say "feel free to put the following link in your blog"

"feel free" sounds less mandatory then "please include" and "on your blog" is better then saying "in your index" (gives them more freedom to put it where they like, so they are more likely to do so)

    Some other thoughts:

the "g" of "blog" in your logo is hard to see, the yellow on white is not the best, maybe make it the orange of your "Search" button?

On a serious note, I do honestly believe from what I have read in googles TOS and this forum that ads on pages with no content such as your directory will get your in trouble with Google, and could get you banned before you have even started.

Take the advice here and remove the ads.. you could be cunning and change your code to only show ads on pages that have 4 or more links, this way you can start showing ads earlier.

I also think it would be a good idea that if you click on a link to a section with no blogs that it automatically takes you to the submit form for that area and says "There are no blogs in this section, why not add yours?" or "There are no blogs in this section, be the first and add your blog"

Also latest links just takes me to the index page, should this not show the latest links in a list form? That's what I would expect.

woah, all that free advice, must be the weekend :)

    No problem

Good man, you know it makes sence.. first thing you should do is remove all the ads... you can't be making much $ from them at the mo, so its no big loss to you and will save you from any trouble with the big G.

I wouldnt submit a website to a directory that starts with so much ads on the front page either. It doesnt really look professional.

I had a thought... (just the one)

On my weekly read of googles bible I saw this, and thought of you and directories /w ads in general
So if/when you have an area with over 100 links, break it up into pages... and they do say "reasonable number" and "fewer than 100", well 40 links on one page imo is too many and therefore NOT a reasonable number, and 40 is fewer than 100 ;) Could be a good reason to disable your account.. I would keep it down to 20 listings per page..

Another thought... adSense works best when there is loads of text content on a page... when you submit a URL, can you write a summary about it? this summary could be included with the link, this way you don't just have a page with 20 links and some ads..

EVEN BETTER... YOU write a summary on each link added, cos the owners of the blog will just all put "the best blog ever" whereas if you write a mini summary / review, then that would be useful content! :)

I've seen that directory design a few times before, like where you select your category. I dunno, it just seems familiar to me.

    Well, just take a look ---> http://www.kingbloom.com

I tried to keep it as unobtrusive as possible. I have recently added adlinks as well in a horizontal setup. Sure it is worth it. I do not see it making me rich. It is merely supplimental IMHO. Money wise I see footer links, sponsored links and premium listings as the way to go. Again, nothing to write home about, but the directory will pay for itself with minimal effort on your part.

For sure kingbloom is one of the finest way to implement google ads on directory.

Yodaya: ads on your site make me feel that your site has nothing but ads, and that might happen with other visitors as well. As a result they would hit the cross button or hit the back button.

This happens to you as well, I thought I was the only one:eek:

People have no patience nowadays. When I first started my site five years ago, I didn't put anything on it until a year later, after I had established a reader base. Even then I put ads on slowly, over time. Now, it's site up, adsense up, banners all over the place, etc. Everyone is looking for a quick buck. No one cares to make anything worthwhile anymore without wanting some immediate payment. I guess making a good, usable site is no longer enough gratification. Too bad.

P.S. This isn't anything against the thread starter, just the sad state of the industry in general.

well, it is really better if a webmaster will try to build contents and find hits before applying any ads on the site.
