So I was using a bad neighborhood program to check and see if I was unknowingly linking to any bad sites, and addthis.com and was flagged as a bad neighborhood. Could having these buttons on your webpages be doing harm? They are considered "high sources of spam" and not "family friendly."
What tool was this? I use AddThis on a high ranking site and noticed no decline after adding it. Alot of other high profile sites use it as well.
This was the tool I used: Bad Neighborhood Tool However, I noticed that if you plug in any social bookmarking site it flags it for a potential bad neighborhood. Guess I was just curious if anyone noticed a problem after adding these to their sites.
Nope nothing bad, pagerank went up quite alot and SERPs also continued to rise and AddThis is on 95% of the sites pages. No doubt buggy tool, nobody knows the exact Google formula for this stuff so there is quite alot of guesswork involved in tools like this, pagerank predictors etc.
i've seen a lot of sites especially blogs using addthis.com and i am planning to put it on my blog also.. does it really harm? and how come it become a bad neighborhood links? sorry, i just didnt get it.
After using the tool a bit more it flags some rather popular websites so I doubt it is very accurate. It also stats right at the top that it "is not intended to dictate who you do or do not link out to." It is basically saying that a lot of people abuse the purpose of the buttons and simply use them to spam the social networking sites with their own content. I am curious if maybe newer less established sites get penalized for using these buttons though seeing that more abuse probably comes from the newer sites?
I don't get it... I wrote very clearly in the body of the page: and expanded on it in the blog what the purpose of the tool is: http://bad-neighborhood.blogsblogsb...arification-on-the-bad-neighborhood-detector/ Yet I can tell from the number of hits that don't go to the blog, and by posts like this, that most people don't seem to be reading it. sport302, did you miss seeing it? Or did you read it and just not understand? Should I word it differently? Thanks. -Michael
Sorry if I caused any confusion, but if you have others writing similar concerns it is just one of those things where people want to try the tool and do not read about the disclaimer.
