I was wondering if anybody can help me with this or if theres no legal ground maybe someone whose been doing free wordpress theme can tell me their opinions. I'm doing wordpress installation for my clients and use free wp themes that are available on the net. I usually do small modification such as logo, colour scheme etc. In any case I always leave the footer intact in terms of links provided by the theme creator. My question is is it ethical to add my own link something like say "Put Together by ....." at the footer? the clients have no problems with this, but I want to know the designer point of view. Thanks
I have no problems with that as long as you keep all designer's links. Some people remove the links and put their own.
It is up to the clients, if they want to keep your link, it is OK. However, if they pay you for your work you should avoid free templates.
Thanks for your input, I take it you are a designer/ creator of those type of templates? They do pay me, small setup fee, and I always made sure they understand the deal, i.e the free templates, the link footer etc.
What I generally use to do was put, "Redeveloped my Me - based on the work by OriginalDeveloper" however I understand what you mean if you are charging for a design/development then using a free theme, your client might get upset, if you've quoted them to find a free theme and install it, they'd have no problems I'd imagine
