You can give it a try if you write good posts but I don't think you'll earn much that way,I remember that once John Chow did that and earned around 300 bucks from a whole month.
If I where you, I would try the buy me a beer Wordpress plugin. The idea being you ask visitors to donate a couple of dollars, about the price of a beer.
Buy a beer plugin is way better than a donate button. But putting ads is more profitable than these buttons.
