Adding Music Content to my social network!

    I want to add music content to my social network but don't know how to go about it. I want to make sure it's all legal, so i dont want to upload any mp3 files that are copyrighted.

    I can let my users upload music that belongs to them but i want to have the top hit songs from well known artists. I dont have the money to pay for the rights to put them on and don't know where to even look for that.

    Does anyone know how i can add music to my site where users can listen to them and add them to their page. Kind of like myspace has it set up.

    Thats something that has always left me wondering as well.

    I think that it'd be best to use an external service for such a thing. For example you could use that playlist.com for the music as it wouldn't be stored on your server so i'm sure you won't get the blame if any copyrighted content was to be uploaded.

    I guess you could also just screen every mp3 that is uploaded but i'm sure at the same time that'd be a very difficult task.

    I was thinking about playlist.com but if i go with 3rd party i was wondering if there are any sites that offer brandable applications. If i got with playlist.com i would just offer that service and all of my members would be creating music there. This will give playlist.com more users from me. I'm looking for someone that can setup some kind of deal with me...where maybe i refer members to them and they do something in return.

    I myself want to put music on my social network but i think you can't legally unless you have talked to the major music promotion guys. I will look into it more and tell you what i know :)

    What if you're not hosting the files? Can that be done? Look at projectplaylist.com they are one of the biggest music players that myspace usrs use. All of their music is just being pulled from other sites so they're not hosted on their site. This way they are not doing anything wrong. Right? or are they still doing something wrong?

    Can i have music on my site but pull the mp3 file from another site and just have it play in my flash player i made?

    Since the files are "not on your server", they can't be termed as "illegal", in other words you are just "sharing them".
