Hi, I have a site that is PR3 and ranks well for my keywords but the site is restrictive to how much content i can fit on each page, all the pages are optimised the best possible and i am using a blog on the site to add fresh content for google but i dont think this is helping any of the other pages because competitors are taking me over for some keywords because they have so much content on their page even though i have stronger backlinks. I cant keep changing the content on the homepage because i need to keep it that same for the business and i cant fit anymore in, would it work if i used a wordpress plugin to show featured post of the blog on the homepage, like a paragraph then click here for more? Would this add fresh content to the home page for google?
The best working strategy here, imho, would be to interlink the promoted pages from your blog posts. The interlinking should be done with right anchortexts from the textual content of your your blog posts. If you would have sufficient internal links (~100) for each promoted page in this way, you will get a rise in SERP. PS. Make sure you don't make your blog posts look spammy in this way.
Backlinks are not the problem its content, i have over 5000 backlinks on PR2,3,4,5 Websites with the anchor text and i still have competitors taking over a few keywords here and there because they have more content.
try to promote your blog and give some more backlink to it. your get high listing for you target keyword as well as lots other keywords which you are no targeting. blog are really good in getting traffic for you site while you have restriction that you can not add any more content on you current site.

Content is always king in SEO. But don't add more content, it will look bad. Visitors will get disturb.Add little bit content with descriptive.
Contents and backlinks are equally important. If you cant compete with contents, you have to build more backlinks.
Keep doing both work with each other. Continue your efforts for creating backlinks. But my friend, also never leave to write fresh and updated content because in SEO, "content is king". Who said you that you change the content of your homepage? It is not necessary my friend. But in the sub-pages and other inside pages of your site, you have to add fresh and updated content with good keyword relevancy.
