I'm still tinkering and experimenting with free directory listings.

I've submitted to a bunch of them and will check in a couple months to see if I can figure out if there was any benefit to having done so.

You will see backlinks and that is a good thing. I"ve heard and read that it is wise to add at a consistent rate rather than bombarding directories all at once. I'm not sure if that is accurate or not.

I'm wondering if the speed of submission really matters.

It seems approvals happen anywhere from minutes to months later. That spreads them out by default.

Also, the search engines actually stopping by and noticing is random as well, which also spreads out their inclusion.

As a result, it seems like unless your talking thousands and thousands of links, you shouldn't need to worry about spreading out your directory submissions.

I agree...this has been my experience as well. All the variables are so random -- time until link gets accepted, time until link gets cached, etc that it seems like multiple submissions would not be a danger. The risk, I think, would be if you bought a number of highly ranked links, like say 10 pr6s or something and had them all activate at the same time. But for directory submission I think it's not an issue...
