Well, only if they get blacklisted. Otherwise I can't see how backlinks would ever be considered harmful
They can be a very good thing for one they are normally one way links, two they are quite often from pages with high pr and also with some relevance. I would not expect a lot of traffic unless it a highend project but it should help with seo.
Agree, the consensus is that directories are pretty much useless for traffic. Depending on the search engine, they can help you rank higher for your key words providing the directories you submit to allow good anchor text. They seem to be very helpful for Yahoo and MSN, less so for Google. Supposedly a greater number of backlinks also help in the overall authority of your domain, which helps your PR, and also influences where you show up in the SERP's for your keywords. Bottom line, I wouldn't waste a huge amount of time on directory submission, but they're another tool in the toolbox that you should use.
thanks for the info. it seemed like a good idea to get as many as i could out there but i didnt want my site to seem like it was being spammed to people.
Directory submission isn't a bad thing, but I don't really waste my time with it honestly. You submit your site, wait god knows how long, all for one measly backlink on a site that has thousands upon thousands of other links. And you'll be lucky to get a single visitor from a directory. I'm not listed on DMOZ, and don't think they're worth my time to please honestly.
Submitting to directories will do very little to improve your PR. For example, you're listed in a PR5 directory, and that directory has 3 million sites listed. Here's how your PR will be affected: PR = current PR + (0.85 x 5/3,000,000) = current PR + 0.000001411 And that's just very little!! So how many PR5 directories will you submit your site to just to get to another level of PR?
ive probably done like 15 of them total, i guess i wont really waste my time with them anymore. the time ive spent doing that has been about equal to the time ive spent here reading and i think the time here has been about 18+ 7.369046 /2 -6 x12 times better.
Directories help to build backlinks for the sites. I would prefer well managed web directories. But the number of such resources is very less. So, sometimes I submit to up-coming directories too. There you have to work a little to get more out of it. You have to search few areas like 1) Link page url (prefer static), 2) Whether the home page and other categories pages is cached, 3) A category page should not contain more than outgoing 20 links, 4) Listed relevant sites. 5) Should not have “rel=nofollow†Btw, avoid automated directories.
Directorys bring backlinks is one of the easy way to get backlinks ..,.. PR is 0 for me They help olso at PR But they help very mutch at rankings since you control the anchor text Regards PS : directorys and article submission are in my book the grerates low cost way to get good link popularity + rankings
Its good. It will help u to increase the site's PR. As well the back links. No bad things at all. Thanks W.S
I'm sure it depend on if the page you are shown on has any PR value. If it's really deep in the site, then it's not going to do much for you anyway. Some directories with feature listing will list on top of the page and on the main categroies, that will be more helpful (again if the page has PR value) than being linked really deep. If you are looking for exposure and not just PR, then Sponsorships on high ranked sites or targeted sites will be good if you have some money to spend on advertising. You just kinda have to spend money to make money...
Some of the guys who run the directories will tell you it's a great way to build backlinks -- and it is, for them. But I have found with my directory submissions that the pages I get on aren't even indexed by Google, so they are essentially useless. On the other hand, my pages don't have many outgoing links and are indexed pretty regularly, so the directory gets a nice backlink from me while I get nothing in return. A lot depends on the directory in question, obviously some are a lot more legit than others.
I usually check to see if google has a "cached snapshot of page" before deciding to submit to a new directory. I am often surprised how much directories are charging and the relevant category for my website hasn't been cached ever or not in recent months. In general, directory submission is a very good thing. IMO
I don't undertand the concept of directories. Do ppl really visit them for information or is it meant to be just a link of links?
