Adding extra webpath for file download from website

:I have website setup with apache 2 on windows machine i want to be able to put files in the htdocs to be able to download every now and then when i try browse to directory to downlaod file directly from site example http://homepage/test.rar

i just get cannot be found
i have viewed through httpd.conf file and allowed access but nothing still i have afeeling it is somewhere in the httpd file

i am quite new to apache so please be gentle

 

So you get error 404?
Look at apache's error log for the information

thanks sorted i am officially an idiot:eek
was late last night though

have phpbb3 installed so had to move down an extra directory phpbb3 soon as a looked in log file smack in the face!!!!!
