Right now I have a site where I list daily deals, sweepstakes, and information articles. I am interested in adding a community element where you can log in and become a member of the site. How would I go about doing this? I would want it to be very simple and basic, I have heard of buddy press but I really don't kn ow anything about it.

Can anyone offer me any help or guidance, Thanks.

BuddyPress could be the way to go here but you wind up with something similar to facebook function wise.

What do you mean by member? What is it you would like for them to be able to do?

I guess I just want something to add more of a community feel. I would like them to be able to rate deals, comment, and I would add a small forum.

Are there any forums that work inside of wordpress or would I have to add one on?

See i'm not really sure what I want but I would like to have some kind of community feel where you become a member. Any suggestions?

    BBPress
http://bbpress.org/ its fairly simple but you can get there by adding a range of free plugins to it.

There are a few ways to deal with members and permissions such as something like this..
or http://wordpress.org/plugins/sidebar-login/ which would require something like http://wordpress.org/plugins/role-scoper/ though, bbpress comes with a login widget as well.

There are a range of rating plugins as well. http://wordpress.org/plugins/universal-star-rating/

At any rate, there a bunch of ways to go about this. Its just a matter of making sure the flow is coherent etc.

People should already be able to comment on things.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

Ya, I added a star rating system, anyone can rate though. I may be trying to add too much to my site. I'm looking into adding a PunchTab loyalty to my site, I already use their giveaways. I'm just not sure if it's worth it and if my readers will like it.
