Adding a simple sound to your site. Good or Bad?

I have recently installed a jet sound when you open pages on my site. I thought perhaps it would go with the theme of my site, which is exporting from China. I also thought that perhaps it would make my site more memorable for those who open it.

Can you guys offer your opinions on adding a sound such as this? Good or bad idea?

I hate sound because it slows the page loading down. I don't even keep my speakers on when surfing. If the file it very short and not too intrusive , then it is most likely not a problem.

I tried your page and it loaded fast but I did not think the jet sound added anything kind of benefit to the page.

Nice layout on the page though!

yeah the sound is not acceptable, if you are gonna have an online radio that's OK, but just a sound :( I think better not

and also consider the fact that on some computers the sound volume may be set to high and it may start shouting when people enter your site, in such cases they automatically close that website, mostly when there are other people in that room also

I wouldn't add sounds on sites because they're annoying... and catch people off gaurd. What you can do is add a play button so visitors have control over whether they want to listen to it or not.

i wouldn`t add sounds to my pages. It`s a bit annoying after a while and I don`t think sounds work okay with web pages not flash.

You must also think of another thing. An user is listening some music , he visits your site , and suddenly everything transforms into a mess. What is the first thing that user will close ? your page or the audio player ?

Since the responces so far has been so negative I have removed the sound from the site today, I guess most people don't want to hear any sound when they visit a web page.

I hate sound as i usually surf while the children are asleep and immediately close any sites that have sound in fear of waking them.

Most people will tell you that sounds on a page is not good, normally I agree. But if you do it in a proper way it can be really nice too.

What can be nice is to have a button "start sound" and then stop sound of course.

I'd say it's usually not good to do that if your site has many pages to surf through. Personally, I usually get annoyed by those sounds after hearing the same sounds 4-5 times.

Well there is nothing worse that that background music going round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round ........... i think you get the idea!!

If you are going to do it, then make it short and only have it on the home page. Sometimes sounds can be good for making a impact or presenting something specific.

Other people have mentioned about slowing the loading time of the page, well from a user point i dont think that it too relevant nowadays with 80% of internet users on broadband.

To clarify my sound was of an airplane taking off, it wasnt looped so it lasted for perhaps 3 seconds.

sound will slow down the page loading. but if really want to put a sound on your site, one that doesn't loop and should lasts 5 seconds only or lesser.

The rule is simple: Don't add any sounds to your site unless this is really necessary.
