Well, the title puts it best, which is quickest to rank in Google? Brand new domain, new backlinks, new content? http://www.example.com Old domain, but adding a new page http://www.example.com/widgets.html (even though the domain is about something unrelated) What do you think?
Answer: New pages on an established site but related theme. It is easier to resurrect a site than to create a new one.
Yeah, and considering that you could probably create a few new pages of content with the same amout of time/effort/money/whatever as you spent on creating a new domain. Just make sure the content is useful and relevant to your site, and has good internal and external links pointing to it.
I was wondering about a non related page on a site...site is about cars, and new page is about printers. Which is easier in that case?
It depends. Is your domain name and site in general heavily branded towards cars? If no, you could probably get away with just making a new page (although making a subdomain would be better, as long as there was enough content in both places). If yes, it might look out of place to have your printers page on your current domain.
I think it has to do with an overall themes.. if you have let's say a news site that touches upon a wide array of themes then it is better to put it on your old site.. if it is a heavily targetted site like the example "cars" above then it may not work.. Article sites, classifieds sites, and things that span across themes work very well... I have a classifieds site and since just about every catagory is covered, I can make new subdirectories with new mini-sites about just about anything and get them ranked...
You're kinda missing the point. The question is just theoritical. If site A is about Widgets, is it easier to get ranked for Cars using widgets.com/cars or NewCarDomain.com?
I stand by my point. You will not receive as many natural links to a page that is completely out of place on a site. If you could find a way to incorporate the new page into the existing site then you would be fine and would be getting the benefit of the sites internal PR/traffic/anchor links.
I would put a small printers section on the home somehow (without it being too out of place) link it to a page or section with your info.. link that to the new domain, best of both worlds - you would need the new domain if you expand anyway, but the page will rank quicker.
I dont think so... News sites have multiple topics.. new topics etc. Also, how is a search engine to know the real difference between a surf board and a board game? in that sense there is a relevance cross over in the actual keyword but not the meaning. If you rank very well for 'news' - then you would probably rank well for 'car news' if you tried. If you can blend in some kind of relevance Im sure that you can use this method. Although, Im not sure its worthwhile. But new pages def rank quicker/ better than new domains - which is sensible. I have a site online for 5 years and I make a new page it should rank better than some new domain built today.
That's different then what I was talking about. I was saying it is not worth getting an old, stale domain and resurrecting it for a different subject matter. If you have a successful site, that's a different story. D
