Adding a blog

I want to start developing some natural back links for one of my sites. So I thought I would add a blog to this site.

By creating interesting blog posts, I'm hoping people will link to my articles.

    Now here is my question:

If everyone starts linking to my blog, then no one is linking to my home page.

Isn't my home page where I want the links to point?

If you have a good linking structure for your blog then you'll be able to link to the homepage from the blog, passing linkjuice to the homepage. Why not post links to articles in the blog posts? This will get you more traffic from the blog post and gets the article read, which I'm assuming is your primary objective.

You certainly dont want your link building strategy to prioritise your homepage- build links to pages at a deeper level than the homepage. I'd prioritise the pages which are your main goal e.g. sales pages, category pages etc. It's great to have a high PR homepage but I'd take a lower PR sales page that converts over a high PR homepage anytime.

    Hope this helps!

Aren't the blog posts and articles the same thing?

I'd be using an article as a blog post.

People will link back to your blog indeed because that's where the content they are interested is located. They will also subscribe to feeds on your blog. But this is ok, you have to look at it as though half the battle has been won. If your blog is properly integrated into your site they will also have the chance to visit your site and even if its not you should set as many links as you can (within reason) back to your home page. We have set our blog posts so that the bottom of every post has an automatic block of text appended with links back to our home page. If you successfully market your blog and get enough traffic to it and build high authority for it, all of this will carry through to your home page. So get started
