Addicted to Directory Submissions

I am noticing a lot of people becoming addicted to directory submissions more than before (I am one of them I admit) but I am starting to become a little more selective with the more cookie cutter directories out there with no unique style (not even a custom banner or color changes).

    Anyone else feel the same?

I hit that stage quite a long ways back. I had actually stopped submitting to directories for 3-4 weeks because of it. It was al so repetitive that I felt as if I was on some estranged merry-go-round'

Sounds like a strong case for "Quality" vs. "Quantity" :D I love directories, and love seeing people trying their hands at new things, but with all the drop -in's and drop-out's these days... I look for quality even if it comes with a hefty price tag.

im starting to not submit to directories which arnt really professional, or its a directory in a sub-folder, which the webmaster cleary created to get more traffic to his/her site about something not related to directories. (ie a general directory in /directory/ and the site is an arcade.)

I'm just getting back into submitting to directories after a months break due to heavy workload, but yeah - it is addictive once you start getting results :)

I have to say style is not really an issue for me, more so how well the categories are arranged, how simple (or not) the submission form is e.g. it'd have to be a pretty high pr site for me to bother 'registering' to place a link.

Most of all lately I look at how long I think the directory will be maintained for - I've had a few emails recently where directories are either shutting down, moving shop or lost their db - I'm just glad I didn't pay for those listings!!! I realize its a fact of directories that they will come and go, but its still time wasted if the link was only up a few months.

It's been crazy since the PR update. I log all my submissions, and I've submitted to 29 in the last 4 days. Some will be a waste of time, but I always feel like I need them all.

Image verification is not bad at all. What really stops a submission is that some directories require you to register. Heck, why require your users to register if at most they are only going to submit one site and on the the next directory.

I only go back and submit to the directories requiring registration when I have run out of directories to submit to.

I am totally against image validation. I don't submit to most sites that use it.

As a directory owner I see mow days directories are made with the intention of purely making money also most of the directory owners buy a expired domain with a page rank and make it as a paid or free directory

I think this is a really sorry state of Affairs from todays point of View

thats a big one to, i dont think i've submitted to a directory requiring registration..

Image verification is also annoying... sometimes i need to do it 2+ times because its so damn hard to see sometimes, and theres a few letters that look kind of the same.

Because it takes extra time. Best case, I have to enter the characters before submitting, which takes extra time and trouble. Worst case, the characters are hard to read, and one or more is mistaken for a different character, which causes having to enter it multiple times. There are too many other sites to work on which do not use image validation to bother with those that do. It comes down to the fact that my time can be better spent elsewhere.

You must be submitting to a ton of dirs if 5 seconds to type in the image slows you down! :)

I submit as many as 60 listings to each directory (depending on the categories the directory has and if they allow subpage submissions). So, having to enter image validation for every single one is a big deterrent.

So I'm not the only one who feels this way. Image verification is the worst kind of captcha, in my opinion. It's totally inaccessible to anyone with visual problems, but I don't often see directories offering a more accessible alternative. Another problem is that the same versions of image verification are used so often, which will encourage spammers to crack it, so it's not even very effective.
