Add links, then require site owners to pay you to keep them there

I've never created a directory web site, but I'd like to create a niche directory.

From what I've read in this forum, there are a variety of ways to find the best links to put into your directory and there are a variety of ways to monetize your directory. Here is a proposed way to do both. Is this feasible?

    1. Create a directory web site.

    2. Populate it with thousands of links, especially the best ones.

    3. Wait until the site ranks well.

    4. Contact the owners of the best sites and require them to either:
    - pay me to keep their link in my directory or
    - do a link exchange

(I know, the word 'hostage' comes to mind.)

The advantage is that my directory would contain all of the best sites for my given niche.

What problems might I encounter? I'm thinking:

    - The site owner might be offended.

(But, hey, if my stats show that I'm sending 5 people per week to their site, maybe it's not a hostage situation after all.)

    - It might take too much time to contact the site owners (as opposed to having them do the work of submitting their link).

If your directory is not good people will just laugh at you. You have to make a good directory for people to WANT links in it. and if you have a good directory their is no need to spam people.

People have been trying to pull money in off of directories for years and have tried about every angle you could possible think of but it all boils down to you have to have a quality directory or people do not care and if they do not care they sure as hell are not going to pay for a link.

Contact our network of directories -- and as CEO - I'll respond to you directly. This is called Customer Care Service!

Before accusing others -- you too have certain responsibilities to follow -------------- your submitter must read the guidelines properly- submitting must not be automated ( I personally BANN all of them ! ) should follow the guidelines of the particular directory -------n ------ u r a gone winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just read the TOS!!!!! If you use automated services and ignore TOS - u r doomed with directories and their usefulness.

    Cheers

LOL, your plan sounds like President Obama's health care plan. "just force them to do it for their own good"

But People do like free directories more and in this way your directory will get a lot of traffic and then you can put the Adwords ads to your site.

I don't go for this technique and would not like to post my link there. Maybe you should reconsider.
