hi many times some clients or sometimes we be the clients and we need to talk to the person directly but through PM it is not so possible! to receive PM that person should refresh and wait for pm so my suggestion is why the IM or chatting option is no there? the way should be like this when the person is having green colour before his name means he is online, there are many options such as PM,email, so there sholud be another option, chat! as like gmail has! they had added gtalk in gmail! so plz think on it! my english is not so strong! sorry for that!but hoping you will get what i exactly want to say! regards adwait
Personally, I wouldn't want people nagging me through an IM interface, which is why I don't give out my 3rd party messenger IDs to clients or DP members. If anything, it's a distraction from the actual work. Just because someone's logged onto DP, it doesn't mean they're actually available to talk to you. If they were, they'd check the PM and respond to you. They might be in the middle of another deal for example and not wanting to deal with chat and IM requests. Being able to hit them with IMs just because they're logged in would border on stalking. 3rd party messengers are fine for things like that, and if that person wants to be available that way, then they'll have ID listed on their profile page.
I do webhosting. I actually got rid of all my IM accounts. You can't describe a problem in less than 140 characters.
Having an IM interface won't directly mean that you will be able to be contacted. All basic IM interfaces have "offline" features, where you can toggle yourself so as to not receive IM's..even the Facebook chat has it. It's not mind boggling.. :/ I think it's a good idea. Sometimes PM's are just too time consuming, IMO.
I use my IM ID's for private use, the same way I use my Facebook..so I wouldn't really like to combine those two. Anyways, it would just make life easier (at least for us, LOL) to have it on here. But, I see the drawbacks to having it, also, so I'm not super pushing for it or anything..
Link them to a free/anonymous chat service if you really want to chat with them and you don't want them to know your chat IDs.
You can generally setup a second id with any of the IM services, so another idea is to setup an account solely for business use.
ok you are saying "add your im details in profile" but if i don't want to add anyone in my personal IM messenger but still want to IM with him/her then how! yes! there is a way to use free IM services but aren't the time consuming??? if you add the "IM" in DP , i think few people apart, everyone will really accept this change! PMing is really not equivalent to IM in any way! You have to wait until he/she is reading, writing and then replying! and sometimes there should be IM for some discussion! My explanation: I am a designer! usually always online in the forum "designs"! sometime the clients make the thread [WTB] That time if they are familiar with forums like DP then it's ok! but up till now i have worked or meet many of clients who are new to "forums" and they even don't know how to PM about 60% people i have ever PMed are new! so IM will really help to both of us as a point of discussion! well i am not a programmer so don't know about the possibility but think on it :- "you can give IM service only for some specific forum. example:-Buy,sell,tred" regards adwait
Exactly! It's up to the other member to choose if and when they want to respond. Just because they're on DP at the moment doesn't mean they want to talk to you. They could be busy with other things. They shouldn't have to deal with an IM popping up and rejecting it, and they shouldn't have to worry about managing a separate status if they want to be available or not via IM on the forums. That would be more work for everyone instead of more work just for the people who want to use an IM feature... which you can already do independently. We already get enough stalker-like behavior here from people who obsess over when so-and-so was online last because they're not responding to them immediately. If you want immediate access to someone you already have options for that if they want to grant permission through a 3rd party service. It's not really DP's place to force it on anyone.
but there should be another choice! as ksalman92 said, you can give "visibility" option too! means suppose the person wants himself to be IMed instead of PMed then he can turn himself visible and if he don't want he can make it offline or invisible too!!
Let us not forget that some percent of this forum are really stupid people, imagine trying to avoid all of those at once. Aside from that, some people are rude. I don't want any of these people finding a way to stalk me (or anyone else).
And I already addressed that. Making EVERY member have to go in and set up IM settings is more work for everyone. It's smarter to make only those members WANTING the service do any kind of work -- using a 3rd party service. If you want to be IMd instead of PMd, you already have options. And existing options don't mean a hassle for everyone else who doesn't want to be nagged via IM or have to deal with more settings that are basically unnecessary.
There's already a "Send XYZ a message" link on profiles of people who choose to give out their YM. Yo can click that and chat on the web. Like this: http://edit.yahoo.com/config/send_webmesg?.target=namitakul&.src=pg (This is for the OP)
