Add a blog to my store?

Hello everyone, I recently opened a storefront selling GPS units and I am trying to get some traffic. I was thinking of adding a GPS blog to the site. Do you think it is a good idea? My only concern is that it might make the site look a little less professional. Any ideas?

Blogs do not make a site look unprofessional. The look of the site and the lame content, however....

But, how does a blog bring in traffic???

It doesn't. It brings in REPEAT traffic.

Work on your advertising. That is what brings in traffic.

Blog dont bring in traffic, but you can use your blog to driver traffic to your blog and then to your mainsite bye using it with pinging, carnivals, etc

a blog is also a good way to keep your customers up to date with changes, updates, etc

A blog won't make you look unprofessional. In fact, it will help you to look genuine to your potential buyers as people can check out your blog and leave a comment there.

You should add one, it isn't going to take away from the site and will only improve it.

I have to respectfully disagree with both those statements. A blog is an excellent way to bring in traffic and make sales.

I have a self hosted wordpress blog. It covers a wide range of topics, such as hiking, camping, disaster preparedness, gardening,,,,,,. Some of my blog post rank on the first page of google for certain search topics. Inside my blog post are banners from my amazon associates account. And there is a link in the sidebar to my Amazon Astore - which is embedded into a page on my site. All of this makes the site look professional enough that people buy stuff.

The articles are targeted towards certain topics that are related to my sites content. After reading the reviews, or watching my videos, people then see the links to where they can buy the stuff.

You use targeted keywords in the article titles, optimize your site so you rank well in the search engines and then promote your stuff to people that find your site. When you rank well in google, who needs advertising? You dont. Google will put your site in front of your audience. But I still do video blogging on youtube to help drive traffic to my sites.

A store is like a cake - its just a cake. Having a site built around your store is like the icing on the cake.

I guess there's nothing wrong on putting some blog into your site.
besides, it might be a way for you and your customers to communicate (through their comments).

I put a blog on my site and use it to keep customers up to date with offers, new stock (we sell actual things) other promotions we are having etc. I use our email list to invite customers to read the blog (which is a little less spammy than just trying to sell stuff to them all the time). It also makes me think of new stuff all the time as it has to be kept up to date so I am always trying to improve the site, not just letting it go stale.

I gotta agree with Kev. A blog will only drive more traffic and more customers your way. Because of the system your site is using , URLS dont appear very SEO friendly. A Wordpress self hosted blog would give you the flexibility that your CMS doesnt have. Wordpress has many built in tools for SEM - Ping for example , a simple idea but gets your content "out there".

Write in your blog about new products , reviews , ideas , etc..

Going forward ( if i were you ..) id look at a customised eCommerce site using an open source tool like osCommerce or something.. in fact Wordpress has some "store" plugins you could use.....

Im not sure your current system is doing your products justice !

Best of luck dude - I wanna see you do well

Putting a blog is a great way to give the customers an amazing incite on how things are going on with in the business such as events, funny moment, family members and who you are as an individual! It is a great idea. I suggest starting with a word press and keep it simple then build it later on!

I think adding a blog is always a good idea for most sites...it gives the service and site a more personal touch as you can see theirs a person behind it all and allow your visitors to interact as well. :)
