Adblock and Adblock Plus

Anyone else use Adblock and Adblock Plus? I've been using both for about two years and I never see any sort of ad. The only ads I ever see are ones played before a video clip is played. I don't see advertisements of any kind. It makes the Internet such a beautiful place. Websites are clutter free and don't have all these annoying ads. I never see Google ads on websites nor in their search results.

There's an article about the lovely beauty of an Adfree Internet in the New York Times on September 3, 2007...

Here's another blog article I like.

Why would you like it? If you are on this website then I would think you do something with making money on the internet probably from advertising somehow. I think this program could easily destroy the income of many websites and I think Adsense etc should take steps to get the program not being able to be distributed or change up coding of adsense to make it unblockable.

The thing is if people block ads they are not going to click on them in the first place. There are of course downsides but then I like adblock. Until it becomes a problem for Google nothing will really happen for companies to try and evade the blocking.

That's not true. You can't guess as to what people may or may not do. It's up to the ad copy to get them to click. Most just suck. But most people, even those who rarely click on ads, will click on something if it really looks like it addresses their needs.

Personally, if you use it, I'd consider you a thief. I know a lot of people will disagree, and they're entitled to their opinion. This was already discussed recently here though, and I'd posted my thoughts on it:

It all depends on the market you're catering to. If you run a techie blog, and utilize digg for traffic, you should be doing affiliate marketing rather than adsense, anyway. Those people run no-script and adblock. So do I. Get over it. If you run a site like plentyoffish.com, those people are less tech savvy, therefore less likely to run adblock, and certainly more likely to click on ads.

There are tons of ways to monetize your site that makes adblock not matter. Sell adspace directly, or use affiliate links. Adsense (and other similar ad services) work better in certain niches, and not so great in others. Just keep trying things until something works.

I use Adblock Plus, but I do tend to whitelist bloggers sites that I like, if only so I can see what they're doing as far as ad placement, blending, etc. I get most of my sites aggregated through an RSS reader anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

I think you are talking about script which detects Adblock plugin in Firefox.

Personally I think blocking ads are stealing. I am not talking about pop ups and other ads that disturbs visitors. There are tons of free information on the internet because of ability to display ads. I don't thing this is a threat for webmasters yet, because adblock is mostly used by more techie people who rarely click on ads. But it will gain mass effect, then more and more pages will try to detect blocking programs and redirect users to information pages. Or maybe big advertising companies will do something. We will see :)
