Okay, Let me share my ideas with you. First of all, Content is the king. You should have a good content on your website. You should use rich keywords on your website. Keep updating your site with unique and rich content. You should be updating your site with new content daily. You could also change your signature on forum(s) where there is good activity and also you should have good amount of posts. You could also change your signature of Mails, Whenever you send the mail to someone, they will look into your signature and this can get you good traffic. You should also spend some money for advertising. You could buy some ad spaces from the sites which has good traffic and the niche of the site is relavant to yours. You should also sumbit your website on various directories. Sumbit your articles on social bookmarkings like digg.com, Propeller.com, StumbleUpon.com and many more. There are many social bookmarking site so try to sumbit on atleast 40. You could also buy some social bookmarks from the members and you will have good traffic from the social bookmarkings. I think this needs to be moved to the marketing forum and your title is a little misleading in what you are asking. Anyway some ideas would be to: do link exchanges write articles take part in blog comments and forum posting leave your link in your signatures at forums and emails etc...
Cross promotion helps, having it on business cards, on products you sell, mentioned in services you offer etc, that helps for relative hits, if you want hits in general there are a myriad of things you can do many of which are listed above
