activating similar threads in VB, is it useful?

some questions about activating the similar threads option in vbulletin:

how useful is it? is it worth the intensity it adds to the server? it may slow down too much? which are the benefits?

if i don't do the "rebuild search index", will the forum eventually start showing the similar threads?
i have almost 2 million posts, i'm afraid it could take too long to do the rebuild

    thanks

It's a weird one because yes, it's useful but it's too late.

Here on DP I see people post a question that is already answered, as proven by the similar threads. But the OP only sees that AFTER posting.

It should be like Digg, where you get to see similar threads BEFORE posting. That would make it really useful.
